Tony Harris
Tony anchors the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (EST) edition of CNN NEWSROOM each weekday, where he features a weekly segment, “”What Matters”,” that focuses on important issues in the African American community. Before joining CNN in September 2004, he was an anchor for WGCL-46 in Atlanta. At the CBS affiliate, Tony anchored the station’s 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 11 p.m. weekday newscasts. Before his tenure at WGCL, he worked in Baltimore as the primary anchor for WBFF/WNUV-TV.
Beginning his career as a radio disc jockey in Baltimore, Tony found a place in front of the camera as a features reporter for P.M. Magazine in Cleveland. He went on to co-host the program before becoming New York correspondent for ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT and a host for the celebrity news segment on HBO. Tony has covered numerous stories, including the return of democracy in Haiti, a human smuggling business stretching from Hong Kong to San Francisco’s Chinatown and the effects of Gulf War Syndrome on American soldiers. Tony’s celebrity interviews have included Tom Cruise, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Barbara Walters and Denzel Washington. He won a regional Emmy for “Tough Choices,” a half-hour special about teenagers in prison.
Tony attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
